At the Tuesday, May 12 City Council meeting, the City’s Agency for Community Development will seek the Council’s approval to proceed with a proposed major water park hotel development in the InternationalWEST resort area. The project developer is McWhinney Enterprises.

“You can’t argue with a track record as successful as McWhinney’s” says Garden Grove Economic Development Director Chet Yoshizaki. He adds, “We need to have solid experience in our corner for a project that holds such key marketability of the area.”

McWhinney proposes a 600-room, 10-plus story hotel with 15,000 square-feet of meeting space, connected to a three-acre indoor and/or outdoor water park. The development would also offer 18,000 square feet of restaurant space and parking structure. The 10.3-acre project site is located at Harbor and Garden Grove Boulevards, about 1.5 miles from the Disney Resort.

According to Yoshizaki, the water park hotel project would be the first of its kind in California, and would generate an estimated $5.3 million per year in tax revenue to the City, including up to 600 temporary and permanent jobs.

McWhinney originated the commercial development of the City’s InternationalWEST resort area, attracting several popular restaurants and hotels, and providing a catalyst for other full-service hotels that followed.

The meeting takes place at 6:30 p.m., in the Garden Grove Community Meeting Center Council Chamber, at 11300 Stanford Avenue. For more information, please contact the City’s Economic Development Department at (714) 741-5120.
